Omens & Signs

Keep an eye out for any signs and signals from nature.  One of the most common and well known is finding a feather in your pathway but there are many more.  What about a poorly house plant?  If you have been looking after it properly is it a sign of a sickly relationship in the family?  Take a look in the garden, are there plants growing together or entwined that don’t usually mix?  It could be a sign of love or a relationship.  Don’t forget the plants that self-seed in the garden, where are they growing and what type of plants are they? 

Symbols in nature & sacred geometry

Mother Nature provides us with a huge amount of natural symbols and sigils in her creations.  The spiral for instance is an ancient magical symbol and appears all over nature, think about the shell of a snail or a fern leaf curled up before it opens out.

Witches' Ladders

The first recorded find of a witches’ ladder was in 1886 during the repairs of an old house in Somerset, England.  Within the roof space they found a pile of broomsticks, an old chair and a length of braided cord, with a loop at one end and lots of cockerel feathers threaded through the braid.

Columbine/Aquilegia

Hawthorn

Hawthorn is a hedgerow plant that grows well even in poor soil and high winds.  It has white flowers in spring that are followed by dark red berries in the autumn.  Watch out for the spiky thorns though.

Blossoms

The blossom or flowers from any tree or plant can be popped into a vase to dress up your altar or dried or pressed to use in magical workings, incense blends and crafts.  Dried petals and flowers can also be pressed onto candles quite effectively or steeped in oil to create anointing oils and perfumes.
