New Moon, New Friends

When I moved to San Francisco, I didn’t know a soul, but I used this tried-and-true trick to fill my life with friends.

On the first Friday after a new moon (Freya’s Day, which is ruled by Venus, is ideal for fun, love, flirtation, gossip, and good times), light amber incense. Anoint yourself with amber oil and dance around, arms flung out and upward. Say aloud:

I call upon you, friend Freya,
to fill my life with live and joy. I call upon you, Goddess,
to bring unto me that which I enjoy
in the form of people, wise and kind.
This I ask and give thanks for; blessed be.

Binding Ink Spell
If you are lucky enough to live in the country or near a wild and weedy meadow, you can easily find pokeberries. Though poisonous when eaten, these magenta berries make wonderful homemade ink. You can imbue this wine-colored ink with magical powers with this simple spell.

During a waning moon, fill a vial with dark red ink and add the juice from the crushed pokeberries. Add a few drops of burgundy wine from the bottom of your love’s glass and one drop of a fruited essential oil such as apple blossom, apricot, or peach.

Adventurous witches sometimes prick their fingers and add a droplet of blood as well. Incant aloud:

By my hand, this spell I have wrought.
With this sacred ink, I will author my own destiny.
And have the happy love I sought.
Blessed be.

Now write the fate you envision for yourself and your lover with enchanted ink.

Dreams of Devotion: Pillow Talk

To secure lasting love from a nascent romance, a love pillow can cast a powerful, binding spell. This spell works best if you use a soft, homemade pillow.

On a Friday, take two yards of pink satin fabric and stuff it with softest goose down and the dried petals of a red rose you’ve grown or received from your lover. Sew it with golden thread while you whisper:

Manifesting Magic Box: Sweet Herbs of Love

The sweet scent of petals and herbs can bring love when you cast this spell. Try to perform this spell during a full moon.

    • A small lidded box
    • 1 rose quartz crystal
    • 1⁄2 cup fresh red and pink rose petals
    • 1 whole vanilla bean, chopped
    • 1⁄3 cup dried woolly thyme
    • A pinch of ground cinnamon
    • Piece of white paper and a pen

Mix the flowers and herbs together and fill the bottom half of the box with the mixture. Then write five qualities you want in a new lover on the piece of paper. They should be a mix of personality traits along with physical characteristics. For example, I did this in a few years ago and wrote that I wanted a love with long black hair. Sure enough, I met a handsome man with beautiful, waist-length black hair. This manifesting magic works! Fold the paper at least once so it will fit into the box. Fill the rest of the box up with the herbs. Nestle the crystal in the herbs right at the top, then close the lid. Each night, open the box up and take a sniff to remind you of your search for true love.

Autumnal Equinox Ritual: Macon, September 21

Establish one room in your house as the temple. Ideally, it is the room in which you normally keep an altar or sacred shrine. In any case, you should create an altar in the center of the space. Place four small tables in the four corners of the directions and place four evenly spaced candlesticks between the tables. Place a loaf of freshly baked bread (bread you have made with your own hands is best) in the east, a bowl of apples in the south, a bottle of wine in the west, and a sheaf of wheat or a bundle of dried corn in the north. Upon the main altar, place a candle, a plate of sweet cakes and a goblet. Light incense and place it in front of the cakes. Before your ritual, take some time for contemplation. Think about what you have achieved during this busy year:

What have you done?

Dressed to Thrill: Charging Your Jewelry with Enchantment

Before a special date night or big evening event, you can enhance your own energy field with jewelry magic. Charging a gem or crystal imbues it with your intent. Upon charging your jewelry, you can use it in spellwork or anytime you want to surround yourself with the magic you put into the gemstones. While picturing your truest wish and hope, and what you ultimately want to achieve through this process, anoint a candle with an essential oil that most expresses your energy. Perhaps it is rose or, as in my case, amber.

Begin by lighting the candle and gazing into the flame. Then, place the piece of jewelry in front of the candle and say aloud,

Hope and Healing Candle Consecration

Recently, I have been wishing and hoping for peace in this world of ours, as have most of us. I have been making, burning, and giving away candles with the word “peace” written with crystals embedded in the soft candle wax.

If possible, perform this spell during a full moon night for the greatest effect. Place your stained-glass peace candle on your altar and light rose incense, which represents love and unity. Light the candle and chant:

I light this candle for hope,
I light this candle for love,
I light this candle for unity,
I light this candle for the good of all the world
That we should live in peace. And so it shall be.

Sit in front of your altar and meditate, eyes closed, for a few minutes while visualizing peace in the world. Let the candle burn completely for full charging. Whenever the world around you feels chaotic, light this candle and meditate on a sense of peace enveloping you. And it will.
