Pagan News Beagle: Faithful Friday, June 10

The definition of "karma" is detailed. Japan's native religion of Shinto finds itself in trouble financially. And the Islamic ritual fast of Ramadan is explained. It's Faithful Friday, our weekly segment on faiths and religious communities from around the world! All this and more for the Pagan News Beagle!

A lot of people talk about karma but just what is karma anyway? Is it (as some people suggest) as simple as "good things happen to good people and bad things happen to bad people?" Or is there more to it? Read up more on the concept over at Buddhist magazine Lion's Roar.

When it comes to teaching philosophy in schools it's fairly clear academia has a preference for the thinks of ancient Greece and their intellectual descendants in Europe. But the Western world doesn't have a unique claim on philosophy. What if more schools taught Chinese philosophy?

It may not be obvious to many Westerners but there's a large tradition of holy women in Islam. At Patheos, Daliah Merzaban talks about her own spiritual connection to the religious heroines of her faith.

Some controversy has followed Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan's open favoritism towards Shinto, the country's traditional belief system. But despite Abe's own patronage of various shrines, Shinto as an institution in Japan is actually remarkable weak. At Bloomberg, Isabel Reynolds explains.

What is Ramadan? Many Westerners know it has something to do with fasting and that it lasts a month but there's a lot more to it than just those two facts. At The Huffington Post, Antonia Blumberg gives the rundown on the Islamic festive month.

Aryós Héngwis (or the more modest Héngwis for short) is a native of the Pontic-Caspian steppe, born some 5000 years ago, near the village of Dereivka. In his youth he stood out from the other snakes for his love of learning and culture, eventually coming into the service of the local reǵs before moving westward toward Europe. Most recently, Aryós Héngwis left his home to pursue a new life in America, where he has come under the employ of BBI Media as an internet watchdog (or watchsnake, if you will), ever poised to strike the unwary troll.
