How much do you really know about astrology? For most of us, our knowledge of this sacred art doesn’t extend much beyond knowing our Sun sign and maybe reading our daily horoscope in the newspaper or online. And that’s a pity, because this most popular form of divination is a powerful tool of prophecy and self-knowledge for any Witch.

Since the ancient Sumerians began plotting the courses of stars and planets, astrologers have sought to correlate the activities of celestial bodies to the events of human-kind and civilizations. Astrology’s “uncanny” ability to reveal our selves and to predict events explains its great popularity. But exploring past the signs of the Zodiac and the influence of the planets, we find ourselves in challenging territory. Very often the jargon of squares, trines, and sextiles makes us feel like we’re back in high school geometry, proving that the formal study of astrology is something that can take years, even decades, to master. How do we make the most of this exciting field of knowledge, without biting off way more than we can chew?

Astrologer Kris Brandt Riske comes to the rescue with her newest release from Llewellyn Publications, The Complete Book of Astrology. Presented in a fun, easy to access format, The Complete Book of Astrology really gives the reader a solid foundation. Riske goes into detail, explaining each sign, planet, and house and what influences they embody for good and ill. She then breaks down how each planet manifests in each sign, and what influences the houses represent. If you have ever had your birth chart done, but are still clueless as to what all that arcana means, Riske’s work allows you to cast your own horoscope. While I could live without studying the birth charts of Brad Pitt or Condoleezza Rice, Riske helpfully includes their charts to give concrete examples of certain transits. The Complete Book of Astrology is a fun, concise guide for anyone with an interest in astrology.
