Pagan News Beagle: Faithful Friday, July 3
Today, for Faithful Friday and in celebration of the Supreme Court's decision on same-sex marriage we take a look at different faiths' view on the matter. Join us as we hear George Takei's experiences with both Buddhism and homosexuality, the ways in which American Muslims have reacted to the decision, and a Hindu's perspective from Patheos. All this and more for the Pagan News Beagle!
Internationally recognized for his role as Hikaru Sulu on the 1960s science fiction TV series Star Trek as well as his recent activism on behalf of gay rights, George Takei is perhaps one of the most famous gay celebrities in the world. Writing for Lion's Roar, George Takei describes his life experience with both Buddhism and homosexuality, from his childhood to the present day.
Though the tragic shooting at Charleston, South Carolina has shocked and horrified the nation it is not the first nor is it likely to be the last attack on sacred grounds. This article from The Washington Post takes a look at how one religious group, the Sikh community of Milwaukee, has done its best to adapt to the possibility of an attack on their temple.
How do American Muslims view gay marriage? Certainly some oppose it, but not all, as this piece from The Daily Beast details, which discusses the complex range of reactions among the American Muslim community to the Supreme Court's ruling.
Likewise, Hindus in America have had a range of reactions. Over at Patheos Ambaa describes her own reasons for supporting same-sex marriage as well as why she believes more Hindus should, along with gender fluidity.
Lastly, we take a look one more at religions around the world. Do you know what the second largest group in America is? What about India? Or China? Or Egypt? Head over to Pew Research Center to check out the data.
