Sedna’s Daughters: Healing from Family Estrangement

Families in patriarchal cultures often mete out similar types of domination and oppression on their daughters that women experience in the larger world. For many daughters (and sons/trans/genderqueer folks), this includes scapegoating and rejection. Sedna’s Daughters provides a safe space for discussion on earth-based, spiritual approaches to healing from the confusing experience of family estrangement and recognizes all people's inherent belonging to Mother Earth, the human family, and the cosmos.

Invitation to the Winter Solstice Fire (Within)

Posted by on in SageWoman Blogs

Greetings to all on this radiant morning of Winter Solstice in the northern hemisphere of our amazing planet! I want to show you something, to warmly invite you to come with me on a short journey... everyone is welcome, but most especially those who feel that the switch to their inner flame of happiness turned off some time ago and you cannot find the lever to turn it back on anymore, cannot find the comforting path you once tread so easily, or perhaps you never did. I most especially invite those who feel too much suffering has occurred in their lives and to our world that happiness is no longer in reach, that, indeed, you no longer know what it even feels like to be happy, content, at peace with yourself. Perhaps you feel that, considering your own and others' suffering, no one has the right to feel happy, that it is perhaps disloyal to those whom you still grieve and to those who suffer mightily around the world. Nevertheless, if you might take a moment here with me, I want to show you something...that may, possibly, provide you with a shift, and then from you, a shift may happen in our world.

Watch your step, though this path is easy even if you walk with a cane or need a wheel chair. I know it is so dark, so cold; I have been shivering also, but I found this opening in the forest yesterday as I meditated and felt elated to show you what I found. The Witnesses see our shuddering. Though we believed we sat in isolation, abandoned in our betrayal, rage, and grief, our oppressors and dis-spoilers of Earth having a party at everyone's expense, we can see now that we are wrong. Look up ahead beyond this turn among the dark, snow-covered trees, there is a brightness illuminating the snow. Something has been prepared without our awareness; something has been burning and cracking with life without our ever raising our head once to regard it. Now we can feel its warmth...take this moment to breathe in. Take this moment to literally feel with your sense experience warmth creeping around your physical body. I'll wait.

Now, the Bonfire of the Great Mystery burns in front of us and there are cozy, blanket-covered chairs prepared--take yours. You belong. You are welcomed. This timeless moment in the annual Wheel of the Year to pause and be at last with ourselves in the deep quiet is an opportunity to re-calibrate the Template of our Being. Look across the intense orange flames. Someone is standing on the other side holding a cloak for you and a candle. If you like, go to this being and allow yourself to be cared for and comforted. Take the candle and light its wick from the bonfire. This is your inner flame that will sustain you all through the upcoming year.

This sacred day is a turning point, if we wish it to be. We can allow Renewal after loss; Restoration after devastation. Suffering can be decreased and peace increased by using our conscious will. Why bother? Because if we love one another, love Mother Earth, love humanity & all Earth's creatures, then we better start loving ourselves and working and living from a place of peace, seeing through the darkness to the Bonfire of Hope. We must give ourselves permission to be brave and feel hope and happiness again. Why? Because hope is expansive to our consciousness--we already have enough science and intellectual knowledge to turn around poor leadership and environmental devastation--what we have a great dearth of is human trust and hope. What is accomplished from a place of misery? (more suffering) What is accomplished from a place of trust and joy? (life-giving solutions to current problems: personal and global).

People who were cut-off from their biological kin naturally feel, at times, quite alone in the world, but, truly, you are not. On this day, the return of the sun, we can be reminded that there is an ever-present, sustaining witness and companion to us from whom we can not be severed. From the Bonfire of the Mystery, we can ever light our own flame of life where happiness is still available, but we must generate it and choose it if that light will grow and reach out to touch others.

In the new year, may your Inner Flame Glow--May you put on the mantle of your human birthright confidently and embrace what can never be taken from you knowing that, as your peace grows, so it touches everyone you yearn for now, touches and heals your ancestors, and touches and heals everything in this world you wish to protect. We all work most effectively when we are most whole and most authentically who we are--in 2020, let's show up and be as real as we can be! I will never do this "perfectly" and neither will you--perfection is not needed!; but, together, we can make something magnificent grow and glow! Every day, a little bit, I will let the warmth of this fire heal me, and I know I will eventually see your face shining back at me, telling me "It's OK. You got this!" Thank you all for your support and willingness to walk this path...Happy Winter Solstice!

I have a Ph.D., am a victim's advocate, college-level educator, and was shunned by my maternal biological kin and their family friends over a decade ago. I have built an international community of daughters (and sons) committed to supporting one another and thriving despite the aggression of our relatives. “Sedna” is the EuroAmerican name of a revered Inuit Creatrix who was violently rejected by her parents and cast into the sea to die, but instead survived to create otters, seals, and whales.  Sedna is also the name of a star just appearing in the farthest reaches of our solar system and discovered by astronomers on November 14, 2003. Nick Anthony Fiorenza writes that "Sedna's message here is that humanity must recognize the truth about the suppression, persecution, abduction and exploitation of the feminine force in the world; and this mentality perpetuating such must be addressed and changed." Healing women is my life's work. See my Facebook Page at
