Hedge Witch: Into the Wilds…

Let me take you on a journey through the wilds of nature and back to the roots and bones of witchcraft, a natural witchcraft that works with the seasons and all the natural items that Mother Nature provides drawing on magical folk lore with a dash of hedge witch and gypsy magic too.

Flames of the fire

Fire is a very powerful element well they all are really in their own special ways.  Fire has the ability to cleanse and clear away through the force of destruction.  Sometimes we do need to burn away negative influences and energy to be able to restart.  Not literally of course, I am not encouraging anyone to burn down houses!

Fire can be used in spell work to burn petitions, to scry, for burning herbs and of course to provide heat for night time rituals.   PLEASE… (I know I don’t really have to say this but…) if you are in the woods or forest area check that you are allowed to start a fire (a lot of places don’t give permission for obvious reasons).  If you are given the go ahead make sure you take the proper precautions and don’t let it get out of hand, a fire in the woods or grassy fields can cause a huge amount of damage not only to the land and plants but also to the animals that live there.

Scrying with flames is great fun, you don’t have to use a bonfire/campfire/fireplace you can just use a candle but you get brilliant images with a full ‘set’ of flames.  Be mindful that fire is a fickle thing and it does like to play games with your mind though…You don’t need anything special to scry with flames other than…flames…once the fire is going nicely sit back and relax, ground yourself and then gaze into the flames.  Watch for any symbols that you might see not just in the flames but also in the glowing embers and the smoke.  Also listen careful because sometimes the fire may speak to you.  You might get very clear images or even hear words but equally you may just get flashes of image, symbols or sounds that you will need to translate.  If you have some herbs to hand you can throw them onto the fire to get some interesting shapes and smoke in particular, try using the more woody herbs.

If you have a back garden you can use a fire pit or chimenea very successfully for fire magic.  However if your space is limited you can work with a cast iron cauldron or a fire proof dish.

Simple workings can be done by using small slips of paper.  If you want to get rid of a bad habit then write it down on a piece of paper and throw that into the fire, you might also like to create a chant to go with it or add in some corresponding herbs.   Similarly if you are having a run of bad luck you can write that down on the paper and burn it.   Gossip can be stopped by writing the rumours on paper and throwing it into the flames.

Rachel is a witch...has been for a very long time, not the green skinned warty kind obviously...the real sort - but she is also a working wife and mother living in Hampshire, England who has also been lucky enough to write and have published a growing stack of books on the Craft. She loves to learn she loves to study and continues to do so each and every day but has learned the most from actually getting outside and doing it. She regularly gives talks and workshops at pagan events. Rachel is also founder and an Elder at the Kitchen Witch online school of witchcraft. She likes to laugh...and eat cake...
