The Magical Properties of Forsythia
After a long stint in Los Angeles and a life mostly lived in California, I'm finding my first springtime in the country in central Missouri to be indescribably magical. As the flowers begin to bloom and the green begins to return, I am truly shocked to behold all the botanical life that just bursts forth everywhere, all on its own, without the intense watering and cultivation that was so often necessary in my former desert environment. And it seems that so many different flowers, all in one place, are expected to miraculously appear on the scene at various times throughout the year! It's a kaleidoscopic theater of brightness and life.
For example, I recently discovered that a seemingly lifeless shrub right in front of our house had - quite possibly overnight - adorned itself in elegant, delicate, and intensely bright yellow blooms. I've since spied the same blossoms elsewhere in my area. Now that I know that this beauty as forsythia, I thought I'd explore some of her floral magic and wisdom.
Calm Energy
In Chinese medicine, forsythia (lian qiao) is used to clear heat, soothe inflammation, and calm the skin. This general calming vibration is complimented in such a lovely way by forsythia's gentle, effervescent energy. She's quite a lot like a fresh morning breeze. Spend time with a blossoming forsythia, perform a visualization exercise incorporating her, or take the homeopathic flower remedy (you can create it yourself or purchase it) to get your energy moving in the calmest and most pleasant of ways.
Help with Waking Up in the Morning
As such a bright and early riser (she blossoms in the wee hours of the spring), forsythia can be a good ally for those who have trouble getting up in the morning. For this purpose, perhaps visit a blossoming forsythia and request help with this challenge. If and when it feels right, lovingly gather a blossom, then take it home and press it. When it's dry, mount and frame it attractively, and hang it close to your bed.
Nervous System Healing
In our modern world, most of us can use an infusion of healing and soothing for the nervous system. And forsythia can provide just that, transforming our nerves from fingernails on a chalkboard to a field of soft grass in a gentle breeze. To heal and reset the nervous system, spend time with a blossoming forsythia, or simply close your eyes and visualize her, conjuring up a strong sense of her blossoms gently quivering in the breeze.
Optimism
In the Victorian language of the flowers, forsythia translates to anticipation. This reminds me of the optimistic vibe I received when I tuned into her: it felt like the sentiment, something wonderful is about to happen. Certainly, the wisdom of forsythia can support you if it's your intention to get into a more positive mindset and optimistic momentum.
