Ecstatic Pumpkins

It is finally here. The most important, crucial, and beloved day to Witches, Wiccans, and Pagans everywhere is nigh. What are you going to do about it? I know what I plan on doing. Celebrating. As in, all weekend long. Oh don’t get me wrong. I’ve already taken liberties to honor the big build-up all month long: decorating, reading scary things, binge-watching scary movies and TV shows, purchasing candy, pumpkins to carve, and costumes to don. Not that I don’t indulge in a number of these things already, come to think of it. But now – now – I have every excuse in the world to revel in every second of the sabbat. To completely immerse myself in the best season of the year until Samhain crossquarter day if I so choose. And you know what else? No one can say “boo” about it. I know that plenty of revelers that don’t practice have also jumped on the Halloween fun train. Halloween certainly rivals Christmas for America’s most popular holiday. The commercialism doesn’t really bother me, though. To be able to give greater importance to my absolute favorite magical time of year, without hesitation is not a bad thing, in my book.

My suggestions during this cherished window involve a lot of what I mentioned above. Here are some more to add on to the October bonfire:

1. Find any excuse to dress up and take it. I cannot stress this enough. Even if you think you’re above your inner-kid self, I have news for you. You’re not.

2. Rake some leaves and jump in them. Or simply run through some that no one has bothered to rake yet. Definitely one of life’s finer simple pleasures.

3. Make caramel apples or pumpkin bread. Share and eat with your honey.

4. Pet a black cat. Or give extra cuddles to the feline – or several – that you live with.

5. Light your already-carved pumpkins with pride every night – until they simply won’t stand up on their own anymore.

6. Give yourself a tarot reading and take note of it in your Book of Shadows. These are often insightful to refer back to a year later, especially if you perform an in-depth card spread.

7. Honor your loved ones and extend your Samhain altar life, by giving it a little Día de los Muertos make-over. Spend some time with them!

8. Plan your costume for next year. It’s never too late to start daydreaming…
