As I write this, I can hear the little mama sparrow chirping outside my corner front window. She and her partner have been busy building a nest in the corner overhang between our apartment and the one next door, much to the great interest of my kitty cat, Tessa. We’ll definitely be keeping that window closed for the birds’ sake. Along with the many robins I’ve seen happily bob-bob-bobbing along recently, spring definitely is making itself known, despite even some late April snow this week. Earth Day is always a pleasant turning point to mark this occasion, because the gaiety and frolic of Beltane/May Day is soon to follow, and that brings a smile to my face.

 A down to Earth Conversation

Speaking of nesting, I had the pleasure of catching up with a return guest on my Women Who Howl at the Moon podcast this month, Melissa Starks, now Melissa Wills, tells all on her recent marriage to fellow poly partner Sam, the fine art of balancing relationships, and also the balance of working seven days a week, both as a substitute teacher and on the games stage at two ren faires as “Mistress Penny!” It’s a lively and positive conversation, so you’ll want to tune in.

Getting Grounded

Whether it’s simply spending some extra time outside, embarking on spring cleaning, or raising a toast to everyone’s favorite devilish actor, Jack Nicholson on Saturday the 22nd (the true bacchanalian party boy turns 86), be sure to spend some time worshipping the earth, tending to her, and treating her well, or just embrace being down to earth on this day. Think about ways you can connect on a deeper level with this north-directed element, and create more grounding forces in your life, particularly if you feel a bit untethered lately. Walking in the grass or through sand barefoot is one of my favorite ways to do this. So kick off your shoes and wander a bit—and don’t worry about dirtying up your floors after.
