Solitary: A Self-Directed Spiritual Life

Let's talk. Come sit with me under a tree or by a lake while we chat about being alone in our practice and our beliefs. Solitary practitioners choose this path for many reasons and have a unique perspective. As a solitary witch, I want to share how I keep true to my beliefs and practices whether I'm working on my own, in a small group or attending a large group gathering. Author of Moon Affirmations, meditations based on the phase of the moon.

Trusting My Tarot

In my last post, I talked about going to the John Edward show and getting a metaphorical smack.  Since then I’ve had some interesting things happen.  I read tarot.  I love the tarot and feel very connected to certain decks.  I have one I use for me every time no matter what.  I’ve tried doing readings for myself with other decks and they just don’t resonate like this one deck.  I use the deck for other people as well and always have the best readings with this one deck.  I’ve stopped buying other decks.  I like other decks but they don’t work as well as this one deck I use.

My daughter’s friend called me out of the blue and asked if I would do a reading for her.  I’ve not read for her in probably ten years or more.  She believes but has not come back to me for a reading since I did one which told her a male energy was going to come into her life and have a significant influence on her.  (Shortly after, the reading she got pregnant with her first son.)

She arrived in full of frenetic, chaotic energy.  She’s always been a bounce off the walls type person but her energy was just splintered. We talked about which deck and she picked my favorite deck. I took her hands in mine, told her to close her eyes and just breathe.  After several moments, I felt a complete shift in her.  She calmed, settled and pulled together.

She took the cards in her hands, barely shuffled and handed them back to me.   Now her mother passed away last year (under six months ago).  I don’t usually recommend reading people this quickly after they pass because it can be so emotional.  My experience is the person getting the reading isn’t usually ready for the message they are going to get.

This was not the case for this woman.  Her reading was strong, positive and affirming for her.  As is normal, she shed some tears – perhaps more than normal but she also laughed and heard the message the cards (and I think her mother and grandmother) had for her.

She is going through some tough life changes right now.  Her mother and grandmother were key people for her, guiding her through all of life’s bumps and twists.  She is without both of these strong women.

I think for a short period of time, I helped her connect with these women – with her foundation of strength.  I was incidental as were the cards.  I helped her focus so she could receive the message being sent to her by the women who love her and bring her support.

For me, this reaffirmed my abilities to read the cards, to make these connections.  Often I’ve doubted my skills and my connection but here was yet another universal smack on the back of my head saying you can and you do so accept.

This woman is dear to me.  I’ve known her since she was eight or nine.  She’s had a rough few years losing her loved ones.  Giving her that connection to her mom and grandmother was a gift I was happy to provide to her.  In helping her, I helped myself see my path.  It’s sort of interesting how such a small thing can ripple out from one event.

As a solitary, I consider myself a pagan witch who is seeking. Residing in rural Wisconsin, by day I work as a clerical worker and at night I spend my spare time writing. Writing is my way of expressing my feelings about my world and life. Raised on a farm, I have a love for nature and am inspired by the beauty and power I find there. I've been married for 33 years and have three adult daughters. Some of my other interests include cooking, genealogy, reading and crocheting.
