Green Man Walking

Posted by on in Culture Blogs

Here in the US, the “Walk” icon at pedestrian crossings is a little white guy. (Figures.)

But in the UK he's green.

In the London suburb where I lived, the sign at the corner crosswalk read: Pedestrians Wait for the Green Man. I always found this highly amusing.

(No, I did not steal the sign. I did not.)

He sure does get around, that Green Man, patron god of vegetation and ecology. You find him in the most unexpected places.

In churches: the old god peeking over the shoulder of the new.

In pubs. That's him that you're drinking, after all.

And, yes, even in crosswalks.

Poet, scholar and storyteller Steven Posch was raised in the hardwood forests of western Pennsylvania by white-tailed deer. (That's the story, anyway.) He emigrated to Paganistan in 1979 and by sheer dint of personality has become one of Lake Country's foremost men-in-black. He is current keeper of the Minnesota Ooser.
