Middle Earth Magic: Inspired Ideas and Seasonal Spells for Your Enchanted Life

I grew up on a farm in West Virginia and learned much about herbs, trees, animals, gardening, foraging  and so much about nature. I incorporate this wisdom I learned from elders in my family into my spellwork. When I finally left the farm, I majored in Medieval Studies, my attempt to emulate my idol, J.R.R. Tolkien. All these influences led me to my own blended brew which I call "middle earth magic," containing a mix of the modern and the time-tested "old ways."

Make Your Own Herbal Vinegar

If you love everything about lavender, you may well want to create your own lavender vinegar. Many herbs make for excellent vinegars so pay attention to which ones are especially appealing with you as you go about your gardening. The more herbs you pack into the jar, the higher the mineral content in your vinegar which makes it more flavorful and healthful. Once you have your own apple cider vinegar or a premade organic kind you and your family love, pick an herb you know works for you and pack a quart canning jar as full as you can. Pour room temperature apple cider vinegar to cover and seal with paper and bands and pop back on the dark corner shelf for six weeks, giving a shake once a week. At the end of the infusion period, strain out any remaining compostable twigs or stems that remain, if any and store in colored bottle and add a pretty label. These make wonderful gifts so I recommend you get a set of labels for all your herbal brews. Nearly any plant or herb can used in homemade vinegars. Check this list for your next batch of brew:

Anise Seeds & Leaves: soothes cramps and aches
Caraway Seeds:  aids in romantic issues, helps with colic
Catnip Leaves:  makes women even more attractive
Chamomile Flowers: helps with sleep, good for abundance

You say, 'seal with paper and bands.' What kind of paper and bands are you using? And won't the liquid evaporate if you don't use

Soul Tribe: A Ritual for Healing

Call your soul tribe together when a loved one is ailing and needs a circle of support It can be at your home or any place that feels safe and secure. I highly recommend creating healing energy at the home of the person who is unwell, as it will create an aura of restoration. Ask each person to bring something to comfort, reassure, and cure the celebrant: soup, healthy snacks, a soothing eye pillow, sleep balm, a hand-knitted scarf for warmth, yummy body lotion with uplifting essential oils, herbal teas, books, or lavender-infused slippers are all wonderful gifts.

Form a circle of care around the celebrant and light candles. Unscented soy candles are probably best for health reasons. As you go around the circle, ask each person to give his or her gift of caring to the celebrant and say what it represents. Here is an example from a recent rite:

Usher Positive Change Into Your Life With These Crystals

What do you want to change in your life? Make a list and jumpstart your to-change list with these crystals. For example, I am embracing the wisdom that less truly is more, I am ready to let go and release some of my belongings that no longer serve me and have become clutter, if you want to get more organized, l get some lazulite. Crystals and sacred stones can be a great source of clarity and help process emotions. Please note that I do NOT even consider crystals to be clutter. They are gorgeous and also helping the entire household with good vibes and good energy.   Also, I have never really had any jade, but recently, I feel like I need the grounding and stabilizing effects of this stone. Additionally, I need to get more prosperity-minded. I need to be better about saving money and thinking in terms of my future security so I’m not reading tarot out on the sidewalk when I’m 90! So, I have been walking through San Francisco’s Chinatown and feeling very attracted to different jades. I’m sure you feel such urges and attractions, too. Often, this might be your subconscious giving you a gentle nudge about some growing you need to do. Listen to those inner voices, and you will reap the benefits again and again.

Hope Stones: Crystal to Keep Worries at Bay

In this day and age of turbulence and chaos, you can use stone power to remain steadfast during the toughest times. Sky blue amazonite is the hope stone of ancient legend and can give you the fortitude to withstand any trials and tribulations.

If you are very worried, and a lot of us are nowadays, pinkish red stones offer enormous psychological support. Turn to such rose stones—rhodochrosite, rhodonite, and rhyolite—during times of trouble and they will come to your emotional rescue. Keep them in your pocket or purse or in a desk drawer so you can hold them in your hand when you feel scared. Harmony will abound. Lazulite is good at preventing and easing compulsive behavior and will put your worries away.

Divination Station: Becoming a Seer

From the beginning of time, the one persistent question has been, “How does one make direct contact with the crystal ball?”  Immediately three words present themselves: belief, concentration, and patience.  All three are equally important; seership depends on them.  If an individual has an inborn ability to fix the mind or to concentrate, that person is well on the way to becoming a scryer.  However, none of the three will be as effective if the seer is not at ease physically.  A posture chair will free the scryer from being distracted by the need to seek a more comfortable position. Now breathe. Nothing is more vital than the breath, which is the source of all energy.  It behooves every seer to learn to control the breath.  All professional seers, like all professional clairvoyants, cultivate deep breathing, for they are aware that their psychic powers are enhanced their lung capacity.  Deep breathing is a great aid to concentration, just as physical ease helps to erase irritability and ensure a patient attitude.

The time factor enters strongly into gazing.  There are three periods during the day that are ideal to consult the crystal ball: sunrise, midday, and sunset.  It is generally accepted that sunrise is the most propitious, for it symbolizes a new beginning.  This does not preclude other hours between dawn and dark times to avoid using the crystal ball are the dark hours from nine o’clock in the evening until dawn.  During that period the scryer is renewing vital powers, either through sleep or meditation.

Crystals to Connect You With the Other Side of the Veil

A magic cord is a rope that binds magic to your and is ideally made from strands of red wool or ribbon. Nine feet long, it is braided and tied into a loop at one end to represent feminine energy and left loose or frayed at the opposing end to signify the complementary male energy. Crystal beads woven onto the strands of the rope can compound its magical quality. I recommend that you use clear quartz crystal beads, which are energy amplifiers, but you can use special stones for various effects: rose quartz for love, citrine for grounding, jade for prosperity and success in work, blue lapis for creativity, and amethyst for improved intuition and psychic ability. This is the perfect adornment to wear as you celebrate All Hallows Eve when the veil is thinnest between worlds. Other stones to keep at hand to enhance your intuition and psychism are:
