Sedna’s Daughters: Healing from Family Estrangement

Families in patriarchal cultures often mete out similar types of domination and oppression on their daughters that women experience in the larger world. For many daughters (and sons/trans/genderqueer folks), this includes scapegoating and rejection. Sedna’s Daughters provides a safe space for discussion on earth-based, spiritual approaches to healing from the confusing experience of family estrangement and recognizes all people's inherent belonging to Mother Earth, the human family, and the cosmos.

Handling the Holidays Like Eagles + Heart-Healing Tinctures

The Winter Holidays have arrived and the new year is less than a month away. For people who would rather skip them because of heart-aching estrangement from biological kin, I dedicate this Blog to you!

Just last evening I was blessed with surprising beauty at a local community gathering in my small town--on a bleak December Tuesday after a long day, no less! Actual tears-in-my-eyes and heart-opening joy! How often does that happen? In the middle of a chicken dinner and a table-full of homemade desserts made by folks well beyond 80-years old (who were drinking black coffee and telling me it doesn't bother them one bit, by the way!), in comes a small choir of mostly local farmers: about 15 adults. The first song was a bit heavy-handed on contemporary religious themes, so, admittedly, my expectations plummeted, but not for long! After the first song, the acapella group launched into one of the most exquisitely arranged versions of "Amazing Grace" I have ever heard. Not exaggerating! After that, they attempted, and successfully sang, the "Hallelujah Chorus" from Handel's Messiah--in a basement, acapella! When I thought the sopranos' voices couldn't get any higher or clearer, they did! We in the audience looked around at each other like, "Is this real? Who are they?" Then there was a brief lesson, about eagles...eagles? Were these people transported from some other dimension? Maybe they were...

The Lesson About Eagles for Those of Us Who Need to Rise

Above Our Struggles with Estrangement:

In between the songs, a young woman stepped forward from the choir ranks and simply said this without introduction or elaboration: "When eagles encounter a storm front, they fly INTO it, allowing the currents to lift them higher and higher above it into the open clouds." Then she stepped back into the ranks and they sang another song with the baritones booming and the sopranos plucking their notes like harp music. In about 30 mins they were sitting with we mere mortals, eating chicken, and cutting pieces of sheet cake with whipped-cream icing like nothing had just happened--as the audience dried our eyes and acted like this happens to us every Tuesday night. Holy Unexpected Heart-Melting Gift!

And that's when I knew they would be the inspiration for my next SageWoman blog and how excited I felt to share this beautiful moment with you--I am just a woman learning to live well with my own experience of family aggression, like thousands of other people are, but the image of the eagles shared amidst a cloud of Handel's iconic strains really touched me--did I mention there were huge snowflakes falling outside and the elder widowed women around me drinking black coffee were still wearing their wedding bands--after decades without their spouses? Their strength blows me away! I know from the research done at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in Kempton, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. that eagle flight can reach up to 60 miles per hour when they are hunting, screaming through the air with such power that people watching (and their prey!) literally shudder at their power. Their energy is incredible!

I think estranged daughters/sons need to remember Eagle-Power at the holidays.

Like Eagles, fly into the storm, i.e. don't pretend the holidays are not difficult. Plan needed balm to take care of yourself as if YOU are the beloved person you miss. Whatever holidays you celebrate, they still belong to you--no one can take them away.

Like Eagles, rise above the chaos, i.e. make peaceful time for yourself on the most difficult days--don't deny it, comfort that pain. Be intentional--what really makes you feel good?

Like Eagles, set your sights on what you want (healing, peace, comfort) and dive at it at 60 mph--really commit to your own well-being this year. Do what it takes. You ARE allowed to be happy, no matter what has happened to you. No one has a monopoly on how much you are allowed to love and be loved!

Heart-Healing Herbal Tincture

For added support, try this Heart-Healing Herbal Tincture combination for the entire month of December (if you are on heart medication, please consult with a Clinical Herbal Practitioner first):

1 Dropperful of Hawthorn Tincture

1 Dropperful of Rose Glycerite Tincture

Hold both tinctures in your mouth at once starting with the Rose Glycerite first, swirl, hold, swallow. Feel the beautiful pink warmth melting down your throat and into your chest. This will heal your Shen (spiritual heart). I do this 2x daily in December especially.

Thank you for reading, and I wish you all a blessed surprise that you would personally value, like I did by the choir of angelic rural farmers on a regular old Tuesday night!

Happy Holidays to all, People of this Holy Mother Earth

and Sacred Cosmos--our truest families....

Love, Sedna xo

I have a Ph.D., am a victim's advocate, college-level educator, and was shunned by my maternal biological kin and their family friends over a decade ago. I have built an international community of daughters (and sons) committed to supporting one another and thriving despite the aggression of our relatives. “Sedna” is the EuroAmerican name of a revered Inuit Creatrix who was violently rejected by her parents and cast into the sea to die, but instead survived to create otters, seals, and whales.  Sedna is also the name of a star just appearing in the farthest reaches of our solar system and discovered by astronomers on November 14, 2003. Nick Anthony Fiorenza writes that "Sedna's message here is that humanity must recognize the truth about the suppression, persecution, abduction and exploitation of the feminine force in the world; and this mentality perpetuating such must be addressed and changed." Healing women is my life's work. See my Facebook Page at https://www.facebook.com/SednasD/
