Truth on the Teeter-Totter: New Moon in Libra

~ Caroline Myss

Get ready to ride the teeter-totter as the New Moon births itself in Libra, sign of balance, in opposition to Uranus, playing The Fool in Aries on Monday at 8:06 pm EDT. On a national level, social justice will be a topic of some concern, and on a personal level, we’ll be looking for balance, justice, truth, and spiritual growth in relationships.

Libra likes to look at all sides of an issue, which is useful in diplomacy but can get old quickly if you need to make a decision. Uranus is going to be forcing some decisions, and you’ll want to be careful not to let opportunities pass by because you just can’t make up your mind. But it’s also important to evaluate and consider opposing sides, so you’ll want to thoughtfully hone your decision making process.

Always the diplomat, Libra is very good at smoothing ruffled feathers and not rocking the boat, but this can degenerate into passive-aggressive behavior and fear of speaking any truth that might offend or upset others. This will be a good time for us to consider how we deal with truth in relationships. Do you avoid or twist it to keep the peace? How does that affect your ability to be your true self, to grow spiritually?

Sometimes we are not truthful in the moment in service to a larger truth. Telling the sales clerk you’ll never see again that his calling you “missy” is annoying and offensive, may be subsumed in the larger truths that he’s an old man who won’t understand why you are offended when he thinks he’s being polite, and you don’t have the time, energy, or desire to school him. So you acknowledge but repress the truth of your annoyance, smile at that part of him that enjoys being polite, say “thank you” and move on.

But if the old man was your father-in-law, then you might want to respect that relationship and your own personal boundaries by having a conversation that expresses the truth of how you feel about his choice of words while recognizing and acknowledging that the truth of his intention was not to offend.

Relationships — including your relationship with yourself — thrive on truth. Aries, the sign opposite to Libra, specializes in finding the courage to speak and live truthfully, from the core of your authentic self. Libra specializes in recognizing the truths of others, and understanding that sometimes larger truths are served best by not expressing one’s own needs and desires in the moment so that others may feel free to express themselves truthfully.

But it’s always important to acknowledge those needs and desires to ourselves, to recognize our inner truths. Otherwise, any masking or repressing of personal needs can degenerate into passive-aggressive, manipulative behavior. So we need to carefully consider how and when we are truthful with others, and make an ongoing effort to be truthful with ourselves. Your intuition comes into play here, particularly when the best option is not immediately clear.

This New Moon offers us a good time to take on this inner work of determining and expressing truth in relationship over the next month, looking at how we may avoid confronting uncomfortable truths, how a respectful, caring relationship requires truth, and how we must always consider the different truths, different perspectives that may be operating in any given situation.

But outright deception and misdirection is also going to be very much in evidence in the coming weeks. Stay alert and do your due diligence before signing anything, and take the time to consider whether you are being manipulated into doing something you don’t want to do. If your gut feelings say no, pay attention!

And There’s More!

The flowing trine between Mars and Jupiter to Pluto in Capricorn is a marketing aspect par excellence, so it will be interesting to see what people are selling, and how they are selling it. Particularly with the opposition to Neptune involved,  deceit may be exposed, or scandals flare up. This is also an aspect of getting things done, and the things getting done on a national level will be in the areas of social justice, public health, civil service, business and government.

Meanwhile, a conjunction of Mercury with the North Node suggests a real effort being made to clean up and soften public discourse, to make our larger, national and global conversations both more accurate and more caring — at least, that’s the challenge. We’ll see how we live up to it.

The tight square between Venus and Saturn suggests restrictions on relationships and fun with a purpose. Spending an afternoon canoeing on the river while taking water samples for the local environmental group, for instance, or taking your sister’s kids to the amusement park for an afternoon, so she can have a break. Consider how you can be of service in a situation, and you may find yourself having some fun in the process.

It’s going to be hard to just cut loose and have a good time though, and many may turn to alcohol and drugs to soften the impact of difficult realities. If it appears to you that someone close to you is moving from substance use to abuse, this may be the right time to speak some truth to them. Communications are likely to be stressed, and whatever diplomatic skills you have will be called on repeatedly.

But there are also opportunities for major breakthroughs in the way we handle ourselves in relationship, and in the work we do to manifest our spiritual goals. The key to these breakthroughs will be found in your willingness to seek truth and to be transformed.

Diotima Mantineia began studying astrology in 1968, taking classes from Zoltan Mason in New York City. For the next 22 years, she practiced astrology only for herself and her friends, continuing her studies while watching an increasingly humanistic, psychologically oriented, modern astrology blossom through the work of leading astrologers such as Noel Tyl, Liz Greene, Rob Hand, Marion March, Stephen Arroyo and Howard Sasportas. In 1986, Diotima began her study of Wicca and started reading Tarot, discovering that she is a gifted intuitive. In 1991, she began practicing both astrology and Tarot professionally. She majored in plant and soil science both in college and grad school, and grows much of her own food and "materia magica" on her land in the mountains of western North Carolina. Diotima’s personal spiritual path is rooted in the Western mystery traditions, the principles of Yoga, and a profound connection with the natural world. Wicca gives structure to her spiritual journey, and she utilizes shamanic practices for healing and to live in harmony with Nature. Over 15 years of studying Chinese martial arts has given her a deep appreciation of Taoist thought which has strongly influenced her magical and personal philosophy.
