Pagan News Beagle: Fiery Tuesday, November 8

It's Election Day and that means it's politics bonanza (appropriately enough for Fiery Tuesday!). This week we cover the contentious election in Utah, Vietnamese activists, and a potential deadlock in the Senate. It's all this and more for the Pagan News Beagle!

Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are the main candidates competing for the United States' top office tonight, but they're not the only ones running. Some conservative Republicans, outraged and dismayed by Trump's candidacy, have rallied instead behind little-known Mormon candidate Evan McMullin despite his next to zero chance of winning.

Donald Trump has attracted much attention over the course of his campaign for his hateful rhetoric towards Hispanic Americans, Muslims, and other minorities. But it's become more apparent that his campaign also harbors an older form of racism within its ranks: anti-Semitism. The Israeli newspaper Haaretz has more.

Vietnam has made a lot of progress since winning its independence, but the country's can't be called entirely free yet. The Tuirot News covers the arrest of a blogger accused of spreading "anti-state propaganda," an alarming development for press freedom in the country.

Bhutan is a predominantly Buddhist country but it does harbor a large Hindu majority. Fortunately, the two seem to get along alright, as evidenced by a recent ceremony in which the Bhutanese monarchy offered a blessing to Bhutanese Hindus.

Tonight, the election (barring unforeseen complications) will be over. But that doesn't mean the fight for the country's heart will be over. John McCain and several other Republican senators have signaled that, should they hold the Senate, they will do everything in their power to prevent Hillary Clinton from filling the Supreme Court vacancy that has been contested ever since Antonin Scalia died last February.

Aryós Héngwis (or the more modest Héngwis for short) is a native of the Pontic-Caspian steppe, born some 5000 years ago, near the village of Dereivka. In his youth he stood out from the other snakes for his love of learning and culture, eventually coming into the service of the local reǵs before moving westward toward Europe. Most recently, Aryós Héngwis left his home to pursue a new life in America, where he has come under the employ of BBI Media as an internet watchdog (or watchsnake, if you will), ever poised to strike the unwary troll.
