Pagan News Beagle: Earthy Thursday, September 8

Could one solution to global warming be as simple as fostering forests? A new pterosaur is discovered that's the size of a cat. And a closer look at scientists' vision of the newly identified planet orbiting Proxima Centauri. It's Earthy Thursday, our weekly segment on science and Earth-related news! All this and more for the Pagan News Beagle!

There is wide consensus among the world's climate scientists that global warming is one of the most serious threats facing our planet. But sometimes it can seem like it's also an insurmountable challenge. Could simply planting more trees and protecting those that already exist help solve the crisis?

The NASA probe Juno entered the orbit of Jupiter, our solar system's largest planet, earlier this year to provide new insights into the planet's nature. Now, the mission is beginning to bear fruit. Astronomer Phil Plait describes some of the new observations Juno has made possible.

When you think of ancient reptiles like pterosaurs you probably imagine giant beasts like Quetzalcoatlus. But sometimes pterosaurs were quite small, such as a newly discovered species that was about the size of a house cat. You can read more about the find and its importance at Scientific American.

If you're using green energy like solar or wind it might seem like the amount of power you use shouldn't really matter. But that's not necessarily the case. Umbra explains why over at Grist.

As we've described in previous weeks, the discovery of a planet orbiting Proxima Centauri, our nearest interstellar neighbor, may be one of the most important discoveries in astronomical history. Over at Discovery Magazine, the staff detail how the planet was discovered and why it's so important.

Aryós Héngwis (or the more modest Héngwis for short) is a native of the Pontic-Caspian steppe, born some 5000 years ago, near the village of Dereivka. In his youth he stood out from the other snakes for his love of learning and culture, eventually coming into the service of the local reǵs before moving westward toward Europe. Most recently, Aryós Héngwis left his home to pursue a new life in America, where he has come under the employ of BBI Media as an internet watchdog (or watchsnake, if you will), ever poised to strike the unwary troll.
