Witches and Other Predators

Posted by on in Culture Blogs

[W]hen I travel abroad I recognize on the faces of strangers the familiar look of being from nowhere.

Julia Kristeva

What is the Moon's current phase?

At this moment, in what direction is the Moon?

From where you live:

Where on the horizon does the Sun rise on the shortest day? The longest?

Where on the horizon does the Sun set on the shortest day? The longest?

How many hours of light do you get on the shortest day? The longest?

Where is the nearest body of water?

Where is the nearest river? Why is it named as it is?

Where is the nearest spring?

Where does your drinking water come from?

Where is the nearest oak tree?

Where is the nearest fruit tree?

Where is the nearest holy place?

In your area:

What is the predominant type of rock?

What is the soil type?

What are the three predominant native trees?

What are the three largest raptors?

What is the largest native feline?

When do the deer rut? Give birth?

What are the predominant winds?

From what direction does most of your weather come?

What are the three most important crops? When are they planted? Harvested?

Can you name:

Three local wildflowers that bloom at Bealtaine?

Three local wildflowers that bloom at Midsummers?

Three local wildflowers that bloom at Samhain?

Like all predators, a witch has a territory and patrols it regularly.

Gemma Gary

You can be a witch and not know anything about horoscopes, sephiroth, or the Emerald Tablet.

You cannot be a witch and not know your own territory.

Stephen Warlowe

Poet, scholar and storyteller Steven Posch was raised in the hardwood forests of western Pennsylvania by white-tailed deer. (That's the story, anyway.) He emigrated to Paganistan in 1979 and by sheer dint of personality has become one of Lake Country's foremost men-in-black. He is current keeper of the Minnesota Ooser.
