The Minnesota May Song

42º and a winter weather advisory. Must be May Eve in Minnesota.

The Minnesota May Song

The cuckoo comes in April,

she sings her song in May;

in June she changes tune,

in July she flies away.

For it is the First of May-O,

it is the First of May.

Remember, Minnesota:

it is the First of May.

Got out of bed this morning

and, much to my surprise,

I went into the garden

and fell down on the ice.

Chorus

We sing to you of flowers,

of butterflies and bees,

but at five o' clock this morning

it was only ten degrees.

Chorus

We've wished you Merry May-O,

and now it's time to go:

for since we've started singing,

we've had three feet of snow!

Chorus

Based on a traditional Northern English May carol, which you can hear here.

With special thanks to Prudence Priest (troublemaker of troublemakers)

Poet, scholar and storyteller Steven Posch was raised in the hardwood forests of western Pennsylvania by white-tailed deer. (That's the story, anyway.) He emigrated to Paganistan in 1979 and by sheer dint of personality has become one of Lake Country's foremost men-in-black. He is current keeper of the Minnesota Ooser.
