Last week we discussed Lineated Sides. This week we were going to discuss Lineated Faces. As a recap, collectively the lines on the sides or faces of crystals are referred to as Lineation. To specify where the Lineation occurs, you add "side" or "face".

Remember that Lineation is simply lines or striations on the sides or faces of crystals. The sides of crystals which have been polished won't have any lineation and it's a great indicator whether or not a crystal has been mechanically polished. Very often there are no surface features of any kind on the faces, so it is less easy to tell about mechanical polishing by looking for surface features on faces. Likewise, don't be surprised if there are no surface features on the faces you check, it is more common that they DON'T have surface features than if they do.

LINEATED FACES

As well as the sides, points may also have Lineation on the faces. These surface markings are viewed in the same way you find Record Keepers and other surface features. Here's another excerpt from Understanding the Crystal People , this time on how to view surface features:

To view the surface (to keep from looking inside of the crystal), hold your crystal parallel to a light source so that you can use the glare that the light creates in order to see what is on the surface.

Let me illustrate this for you. Imagine a very clear lake. If the sun isn't shining off the surface, then you see right down into the lake and you can see rocks and fish and weeds, right? But when the glare of the sun is on the water, you can see things floating on the surface like dust, bugs, or even ripples that you wouldn't have been able to see without the sun's glare. The same is true for surface features on a crystal.

To view the surface features, (you will do it for each face) find your best light source, the sun if you are outside or a bright light or lamp if you are inside. Then, starting with the main face, work your way around the crystal by tipping it until you can see the surface features in the light's glare. Besides Lineation, there may be etching, Record Keepers, or scratches and sometimes, there are no markings at all.

Lineation on a face starts as a small triangle that is outlined continually until the pattern runs off the face of the crystal. To picture this, just imagine the lines in a Zen garden. The innermost triangle may or may not be centrally located. This layered triangular Lineation may start in the center, or it may start on a edge, it may cover the face completely or it may only partially cover it. Surface features can be very difficult to capture in a photograph, here are a few Lineated crystals which I drew the Lineation which isn't easy to see in the photo.

Lineation may also be present with Sigils. I'm not sure if we've already covered this, but Sigils are any markings that represent an idea. For example, a dollar sign is a sigil that represents money and abundance. Crystals may have markings that resemble things such as snake skin, mountain ranges, water or even cities. I have seen many crystals that have three-dimensional cities made of layers of buildings that look like pueblos on the surface. Here's a picture with both Lineation and Sigils. The Sigils on this crystal bring rolling mountains to mind for me. What do they bring to your mind?

Lineated Faces may be accessed during meditation in the same way that you might use a labyrinth. To work with them, follow the lines in and down to a meditative state and when you are finished, work your way back out from the center. You may do this with your eyes open, and physically look at the Lineation as you do this, or you may prefer to have your eyes shut. If you prefer eyes shut, simply look at the Lineation on your crystal to become familiar with it so you can visualize it with closed eyes or simply envision anything representing this Lineated pattern. What you envision doesn't have to be in the exact shape of your particular crystal. If you aren't a visual person, use the intention that you are accessing the out and back energy of a labyrinth, or whatever works best for you. Remember, there are no hard and fast rules (or any rules at all) when it comes to working with your crystals. These are simply guidelines to get you started in a direction.Which foot you step off with or how you take the step isn't important.  The importance is that you take the step.
