Move into Your Houses
by Tasha Halpert

When you look at your astrology chart, you will notice that it is drawn as a circle, with the 360 degrees of the zodiac, representing the heavens from the standpoint of Earth when you were born. The planets are placed inside the twelve pie shaped sections or houses. One of the 12 signs of the zodiac is placed on each edge or “cusp” of these sections. The time of your birth determines the signs and number of degrees of each house. Each section, or “house” refers to a compartment of your life. Each has a keyword that clues you in as to how it functions for you. Your time of birth also tells you your Ascendant, an important part of your astrological makeup. This is the sign on the cusp of your first house.

Sun Signs 101
by Tasha Halpert

One way to discover more about yourself and your friends is to read Sun Sign astrology books.

However, while they will give you some idea of what your sun sign is about, they are often pretty general. Your astrological portrait is a combination of ten planets, not just the sign the Sun was in the day you were born. When you either buy or download a free chart with interpretations, you will learn more. However, these interpretations are limited, and often prejudiced by the astrologer’s opinions. Better still, you can learn to figure out charts for yourself. You can buy them from online services (do a search for “astrological charts”) or you can get a free chart from www.astro.com.

Cosmic Karma: Understanding your Contract with the Universe

Cosmic Karma:
Understanding your Contract with the Universe
by Marguerite Manning
Llewellyn, 2007

I’ve read a ton of astrology books in my life, some good, many mediocre. Marguerite Manning’s Cosmic Karma is one of this year’s best. As the title suggests, Cosmic Karma concentrates on karmic astrology. It is a guide for one’s soul to live better in this life than it did in the last, and pay off the karmic debt that it owes to the universe. You’re going to need your birth chart for Cosmic Karma; as Manning states, “a birth chart shows what cosmic influences were present at precise moment of your birth.” (The book helpfully lists websites where you can plug in your exact date of birth and get your birth chart for free.)

Mercury Retrograde

Mercury Retrograde
by Chrissie Blaze
O Books, 2008

When an astrology book is billed as a “survival guide,” you have to wonder if that is just hype or a strategic marketing tactic. So I took these two words with a grain of salt when I picked up Mercury Retrograde by seasoned astrologer Chrissie Blaze. After reading it, I might add some other descriptions, like “essential,” and “the definitive work” on the most trying planetary time of year.
