Mercury Retrograde

Mercury Retrograde
by Chrissie Blaze
O Books, 2008

When an astrology book is billed as a “survival guide,” you have to wonder if that is just hype or a strategic marketing tactic. So I took these two words with a grain of salt when I picked up Mercury Retrograde by seasoned astrologer Chrissie Blaze. After reading it, I might add some other descriptions, like “essential,” and “the definitive work” on the most trying planetary time of year.

Tarot of the Elves

Tarot of the Elves
by Mark Elroy and Davide Corsi
Lo Scarabeo, 2007

Tarot of the Elves is an unexpected deck. My first thought upon hearing about it was “So will this involve elves in some traditional lore slapped into Tarot symbolism, or something airy-fairy and New Agey and utterly fluff?” Thankfully, it was neither. Instead, what I got was a beautiful story coupled with a practical divination and pathworking tool.

Graven Images Oracle

Graven Images Oracle
by Natalie Zaman
Galde Press, 2008

With the mass popularity of Tarot decks and other deck oracles, it’s rare that a deck comes out that is truly original, something you’ve never seen before. The Graven Images Oracle by Katherine Clark and Natalie Zaman is such a deck. Beautiful, mysterious, impeccably constructed and executed, this deck is unlike anything I’ve seen before.

Llewellyn's Complete Book of Astrology
by Kris Brandt Riske
Llewellyn, 2007

How much do you really know about astrology? For most of us, our knowledge of this sacred art doesn’t extend much beyond knowing our Sun sign and maybe reading our daily horoscope in the newspaper or online. And that’s a pity, because this most popular form of divination is a powerful tool of prophecy and self-knowledge for any Witch.

The Psychic Energy Codex

The Psychic Energy Codex
by Michelle Belanger
Weiser, 2007

Michelle Belanger does not want to startle or astonish you. She doesn’t want to mesmerize you with mysterious tales of supernatural occurrences, or impress you with tales of her mad Gypsy family. She doesn’t want to convert you to her spirituality, or sell you assurances that she can make “anybody, even you, a swami or trance medium in ten easy lessons.” What she offers instead, in her latest book, The Psychic Energy Codex, are the tools and expertise to develop your own psychic abilities as far as you can, probably much farther than you believed possible. She does this with such humor, grace and sensitivity that she really manages to demystify psychic awareness.

Spirit Walking, A Psychic Handbook:

Spirit Walking, A Psychic Handbook:
The Definitive Guide to Living and Working with the Unseen
by Poppy Palin
O Books, 2007

While I wouldn’t necessarily call this book the definitive guide, it’s a fairly thorough guide to the basics involved in a magical practice. The author addresses a wide variety of subjects from protection to astral travel, from working with faeries to doing the necessary banishing and cleansing after all the magical work is done.
