This Artisan Life

Some say magic isn't something you do, it's something you are. Others say that their entire life is magical. While this might be correct for them, I would respectfully disagree that this doesn't work for me. I want my magic to be magical; I don't want to have to bring leaky faucets and flat tires into my magical realm. Having said that, there is a chance every moment to do something mystical, to connect with the nature spirits and the ancestors, to honor the old ways, and to walk the crooked path. This blog is about my journey, and how I celebrate the magic in the mundane.

Fire the Tarot

It's been awhile since I've been here, and that's because things have been... mutable. I've decided to try to re-enter (because Mercury retrograde is always a good time to go back to something that's been previously started, right?) working with clay again. I believe I mentioned it previously, in my last article. I've been doing a lot of reflecting since then.

You see, Tarot is such a part of my life that it is hard for me to isolate things. I see the cards in shapes throughout the day. I think about what card would represent what activity I'm doing at the time. I use the Tarot as a guide to activities, as a focal point for my art, and more. Between astrology (to which I've also returned over the last year), runes, stones, and the tarot, my life is pretty full of amazing shapes, themes and designs.

For a long time I've wanted to incorporate these themes into my art, but I live in the middle of the Bible belt, and always was hesitant, thinking it was probably a bit too 'woowoo out there' for most people. However, over the last three months or so, I've decided to just pursue what I love, and deal with the consequences. And you know what? I'm having a ball.

I still don't have the time to devote to my clay I'm still not making my clay a priority (see what I did there: if it was really a priority, I'd make the time, and I know this), but it is coming. I go to sleep with ideas of masks and tiles and wall-hangings dancing around in my head. I awaken and think, "This is the day I'll make time for my clay!" And then life happens >_<  It's coming, though, and I'm closer now than I was this time last year, and that's a good thing.

Here's the start of things to come.

She's still 'greenware,' which is clay that has been dried and not fired, so she's still very brittle. The Fool, the World, and the Tower are coming next. I was rather reluctant to start working with some of the darker cards like the Tower, but you know what? Every one I tackle teaches me something about myself--as does the clay. To me, the clay is nearly sentient. We do this together. It has a memory, and there's magic in that--but that's a whole other post!

So now, I am going to do what I'm obligated to do for the day, then work in the yarden (yard + garden = yarden). Tomorrow I'm visiting with a dear friend whom I've not seen in over 30 years. Maybe, just maybe, Sunday can be clay day. Watch this space... I promise there's much more to come.

Pottery, writing, knitting, gardening, and tarot are her deepest interests, but she happily confesses that she’s easily distracted, because life offers so many wonderful things to explore. Charlie has been doing readings and writing about divination for nearly three decades, so much so that it has become a way of life. She is a keen astroherbologist, an advocate of organic gardening and cooking, and lives in the Midwest with her husband and beloved Great Danes.

Thank you! Next post will either include a greenware 'Fool,' or the glazed 'Empress,' depending on the timeline ;)
