At the Crossroads: Anyone Bring a Flashlight?
A day in the life of one witch’s attempts at community organizing, group leadership, public Paganism, and joyous shenanigans. Balancing inner work with external obligations, a professional career with public Paganism, and a full social calendar with gratuitous amounts of sleep.
Beautiful Things
Things are tense these days, no doubt. But you already knew that. You’ve already read a few dozen blog posts about how crappy things are and how they’re just going to get worse. You’ve scrolled past even more Facebook memes, ridiculous and terrifying, insulting and true. And I’m sure you’ve had more than just a few panicked conversations with your friends and loved ones.
What you don’t need right now is another arbitrary blog post about this, that, or the other thing. What you need, what I need, what we need, is a reminder of some beautiful things. Here is my list, and I encourage you to comment, to reply, and to add your own List of Beautiful Things.
Potlucks, and wine and cheese with friends
Laughing so hard your face hurts
Perfect first dates
Watching the sun rise over trees
The cawing and cackling of crows and other pretty black birds
Snow, winter, ice – the promise of spring, here before we know it
First kisses
Familiar kisses
Huge hugs and folks who rub your back while you hug them
Seeing those numbers drop on the scale after weeks of hard work
Sitting down to work on your blog/novel/short story/fan-fiction
New Star Wars movies!
Poetry
Hearing an old song as if for the first time
Waking up with warm, snuggly pets
Soup
Community – food trains and hospital visits, kind words and prayers, support and parties
Do not be alarmed that I did not mention the Gods, Spirits, Ancestors, and Allies in my List of Beautiful Things. They are present in this list, because they are always present in all things.
Let us remember the Charge of the Goddess: "Let my worship be within the heart that rejoices, for behold: all acts of love and pleasure are my rituals. And therefore let there be beauty and strength, power and compassion, honor and humility, mirth and reverence within you."
So, if your heart is far from rejoicing, remember your List of Beautiful Things. Never forget that the simple acts – soup, kisses, writing, sleep, community, joy, pleasure – are ALL acts of worship.
Let there be beauty and strength, power and compassion, honor and humility, mirth and reverence within you on this day and all days. Clear skies and brightest blessings, my Friends.
