I jumped at this book as soon as I saw the title. I’ve been seriously studying and practicing herbalism since 1994 and a large portion of my library is dedicated to this subject. My approach has always been one that has dealt more with the medicinal properties of herbs and leans heavily toward a scientific approach, but I wanted to expand my knowledge on the magickal uses. So, when the book finally arrived in the mail, I eagerly opened the package and began to read it. Unfortunately, I was disappointed.

The first few pages of the of the book deal with Gerina’s childhood and first exposure to herbs and their magickal uses, which I found to be an interesting glimpse into her life. But the rest of the book was disappointing, with a large portion seeming to be dedicated to love and prosperity spells. Granted, she did cover a large range of various traditions from Strega to Hoodoo, but she never went into depth on any of the various traditions. Also, the way the book was organized was sporadic, as if the author were rushing to meet a deadline.

When Herbal Magick — A Witch’s Guide To Herbal Enchantments, Folklore, and Divinations is compared to others dealing with the same topic, it is found wanting. Even the bibliography is sparse. Cunningham’s Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs or A Druid’s Herbal for the Sacred Earth Year by Ellen Evert Hopman provides the reader with much more information and the bibliographies give the reader other sources to investigate and expand on their herbal knowledge. All in all, this would be a fun book to read as long as one could borrow it from someone else or take it out of the library but, for myself, it isn’t one I would want to spend $14.99 on.
