b2ap3_thumbnail_nancy_holley_praywild.jpgAhhh! Lunar Samhain: New Moon, in Scorpio, the Sun, newly in Scorpio, and partial solar eclipse coming up this afternoon...can you feel the shadows?

Darkness sinks its teeth into day as the year’s descent deepens. Shadows fill up the street and cold creeps under our skin. Small valleys are bowls of mist brimmed with endings: bones, leaf-litter, rinds, skins, all the husks that held bright fires of life. This is the hour of the Cauldron of Transformation—from death comes rebirth. Listen for wisdom-voices in the storm: Kali, Crow-Woman, Ceridwen, Hecate—all know the need to cut and cull—let the Hag guide you to face down fear. Do not get lost in grief. Ride your power, disturb the air; be the witch, the shocking voice of truthful stories that shatter the status quo. Protest, refuse, fight for a new equality that places the wellbeing of Mother Earth in the centre. The seven generations that will follow us are waiting, crying for a vision. It will come from women working together: sisters weaving magic circles of intent.

Intersections

And now I find myself at another exciting intersection.

When I started my blog, “Intersections,” in January of this year, I was looking for the next step after a wonderful experience contributing to The Juggler. After four years of contributing to a site that commented on paganism and culture, I was looking forward to a new project that combined my love of the pagan community with my interest in the arts and sciences. The response has been wonderful, and it has led me to a new crossroad.

The still centre.

Outside, in the dark, the air is finally still.  Like rich swathes of fabric, the darkness hangs around me, enfolding me, wrapping me in its exquisite embrace.  I sit, breathing in the night air, the smell of cedar and dew wet grass filling me with pure awen.  The last of the crickets are singing in the remnant of summer’s growth, owls hooting softly in the distance and underneath the beech tree near Caia’s grave I let the songs of the night wash over me in waves of indigo and black.

The quiet is shattered by the call of a stag just on the other side of the hedge. Calling to the does, he is in full rut, looking for the ladies in the shelter of the night.  He is maybe four feet away, and his bark and rumbles excite me with the power that he is emanating in following his soul’s truth.  I can hear the slight shuffle of leaves and grass beneath his hooves as he paces up the track and then back down towards the nature reserve and farmer’s fields.

b2ap3_thumbnail_Death.pngAll our times have come
Here but now they're gone
Seasons don't fear the reaper
Nor do the wind, the sun or the rain...we can be like they are

Donald Roeser “(Don’t Fear) the Reaper”

The New Moon of October is an eclipse, which means its effects will reverberate for much longer than the standard New Moon — this chart overlooks the next six months to a year. It’s a demanding chart, but with some hope, some ease, and a challenge to take our spiritual awareness up a notch or two. The emphasis is on the sign of Scorpio, so we are looking at a lot of intensity of feeling, intensity of connection with others, confronting taboos, and a need to deeply understand and accept the realities of death and cyclical change. Venus is in a huddle with the Moon and Sun, putting an emphasis on personal relationships. When the chart is cast for Washington, DC, (find the chart here) it is predictive for the entire United States, and these three planets, along with Saturn, fall in the seventh house. This suggests to me that we will probably be seeing a whole lot of “othering” going on, quite a bit of active conflict — and hopefully some cooperation — in the public sphere, and the creation and/or dissolution of some powerful alliances.
